Was trying to take my mind off the sad things, did a quick GV translation, and found this photo in the process - at the Wikipedia's Maidan Nezalezhnosti page:

Supposedly, this is what they are planning to build in place of Hotel Ukraina (formerly, Hotel Moskva). I hope it's some kind of a joke...

  1. So sorry to hear about your dad and also that someone wants to build this Gazprom-style monstrosity in Kiev.

  2. Neeka, thanks for adding some of my posts to Global Voices....and thanks for blogging about the Mayor and City Council ....your blog has the best info on what's happening.....I will pray this huge thing does not land on Maidan and on a serious note....I will keep you and your father in my prayers....

  3. The Mayor does speak Ukrainian - saw him ans. a ques. Yes, it is rudimentary but he does speak it just chooses not to. (The *&^$.) But he has been under such fire that he is looking for some/any brownie pts. His aide-de-camp is fluid in Ukrainian and a very able speaker (Dovhiuu) though I don't like his message.

  5. Well the Serbian Hotel Moscow is alive and kicking anyway! After they retiled the sidewalk outside it looks very nice indeed.

Its a pity a crooked arms dealer now owns the hotel though :(

  6. Such a building would solve the lack of office space problem. Nice project! Nicely looking, well positioned.

We Ukrainians should be less shy and more positively-looking, Nika.
