I should probably say something about the so-called Orange Coalition. Instead, I go on and on about some meaningless crap - cops in the middle of nowhere. Well, okay, here goes: I'm glad they've finally agreed on the coalition. Very good for them. It was both hard and easy to imagine a Yushchenko-Yanukovych coalition, and the public reaction to it. Now, back to the real world: all's quiet here - I'm off to bed.

  1. Hey, cops in the middle of the night anywhere are scary, let alone in the former USSR where the fear of the knock at the door has probably still not gone.

Last autumn when we moved back to England there was a disturbance in the street and some yobs were bashing cars, I called the police. My younger daughter was shocked. Is it OK to call the police? she asked. She has grown up in Lithuania and Greece and I hadn't realised how much it had conditioned her to think of the police.

  2. Hey, Ukraine is in the next Worldcup round. Against Suisse. I have seen the game Suisse-Korea in Hanover yesterday. Sad, but the Koreans failed to score. O.k.: Coming up, the first final round Ukraine vs. Suisse. I will cheer for the blue yellow ones. Good luck.

  3. Veronica, I was so much into the Korean gamme, but today I witnessed something in Germany I couldn't imagine before. A young German crowd stopped traffic at a central place in my hometown. O.k.,cause Germany defeated Sweden. But not 500m further young moslemic girls were chanting "Deutschland, Deutschland" along the main road. With their scarfs on. It makes one like crying. So unreal. But this was the scene.
