A few days ago, my dear friend Sasha had to busy himself somehow for an hour, as he waited for his "business lunch" at a restaurant near Kontraktova Ploshcha. He ended up taking some really hilarious pictures of this restaurant's menu; below are four of my favorite ones, which Sasha sent me in an email titled "Mutations of cat-fish and other ditches (aka dishes)" :)))

  5. When I first arrived in Almaty in early 1996, I used to frequent one of the few halway-decent restaurants - a place called "Capo's." Their English menu featured an all-too-direct translation of отбивная - "beat-off."

    The waitress didn't understand when I asked whether it came on a plate or in a glass.

  6. I know the perfect dish to go with narrow-minded mushrooms: grilled hen feathers. This is how one restaurant in Yerevan translated what to the rest of the world is known as chicken wings. :-)

  7. My favorite has always been "Herring Under the Fur Coat" (селедка под шубой) served at one restaurant in Mykolayiv. I think it's a great match for narrow-minded mushrooms :)

  9. I love Ukrainian translations... but I wasn't man enough to order the 'dinner of prosperous bachelour' the other day.

    However, it sounds more tempting than the
    'Seafood Cock' and 'Scampi Cock' on offer in Montenegro. The owener took offense to our laughing and chashed us away before we could explain the unwise abbreviation of 'cocktail'...
