Slate Magazine's Sonia Smith has linked to my two entries on Putin's Munich speech, and I've already gotten two comments - which is somewhat unusual for this normally very quiet blog.

Here's the first one, of a sam durak variety ("what, me an ass-kisser? no, you are!"):

What I see is how Putin kick your xoxlopiteki's azzez and how prAFFeSor Yanyk and Dioxin Cheeks Yush wash with kisses Putin'z azz.

And here's the second, from a Soviet-time creature known as anonimnyi klyauznik - an anonymous complainer:

You are a weird character, mamzel Khokhlova! Watch your words. I don't think you have more than one ass. Ne ischci priklyucheniy na zadnicu - as "moskali" say. BTW, why don't you write in Ukrainain, dear freedom child? You don't get paid for it and Ukrainian speakers are not you target audience?

Disgusting, is all I can say.

An update...

[Edited in for better flow on Thursday] - a comment from my dear friend Sasha:

Veronichka,

Try not to read too much of that crap. Don't forget you're still breastfeeding.

Sasha

This one should be good for my milk, Sash jan:

Can you say some positive about Putin sometimes?

Dear Anonymous #2,

Aren't there enough of those who do say nothing but positive things about him all the time? Seriously, though, I think it's very good that Putin is not tall - I don't like tall men.

Comment #4:

Thats pretty funny. behavior is standard for person which came to Moscow from ex-soviet repulic - complex mixture of hate and envy.

Dear, whats the point in Ukranian blogs written in english from Moscow? what is your target audience?

about Iran and F14. do you know that Iran neibor, Pakistan has Atomic weapon? that Pakistan secret service helped to rebels in Aghanistan agains US army? why US dont press on Suadits who finance fanatic islamic movement all around the world?

why democratic journalist Politkovskaa is hated inside Russia?

try to think about it. and dont forget to return to Kiev - Im sure they need a lot of educated ppl. no point in sitting in un-democracy Moscow.

  4. Congratulations on the comments!! Now if they only made more sense. Still, they are pretty humorous and entertaining in their own way.

  5. I enjoy reading your blog entries and appreciate your translation work. It helps me, as an expat, interpret (literally and figuratively) what's happening around me.

  6. Brew low cost beer. The amount of time you spend on brewing beer makes the small difference in cost between "just OK" ingredients and top quality ingredients a minor point. Either way, the cost of brewing a 5 gallon batch is much cheaper than buying a couple of cases of beer in the store.

Beer is made of cheap ingredients, so it doesn't hurt to buy the best. Surprisingly, the cheapest way to brew beer gives you the best results: all grain brewing is the cheapest way to brew when grain is bought in bulk.

You do need a grain mill and a mash tun, so there is a small investment in equipment needed. But you should be able to brew excellent quality beer for less than $2 per gallon, and you could brew a mild ale for as little as $1 per gallon, or less than 10 cents per bottle (one gallon is about 10-1/2 12oz bottles). Most of my pilsners are about $1.50 a gallon brews.

Other ways to reduce the cost of your beer are by growing your own hops and reusing yeast from the fermenter. Easy to do, and it means that I don't have to buy yeast more than once every half year or so. The hops should last e through most of the winter brews. So all you need is grain, which is about $0.70 per pound in a bulk purchase (much of the cost is in shipping).

Beer Brewing Equipment Basic, simple, cheap equipment that gets the job done. Sometimes it adds to the challenge. But through the mystique of brewing and remember that illiterate alewives brewed for centuries using tried and true recipes and procedures before the dawn of kegerators, ph meters or hydrometers.

Beer Keg Brewing. After using bottles for years, you can jump to the corny keg (Cornelius keg). This is an important step because it makes brewing so much easier. You can still bottle, but just a few bottles per batch, and use a corny keg to fill the bottles. You can use corny kegs as secondary fermenting vessels. You can try out method where you leave the beer in the primary for about two weeks until it clears nicely, and then UPI carefully siphon it over to a corny, avoiding transferring any trub.

  7. Why do some people believe that ethnicity, citizenship and residence have anything to do with the ability to analyze reality? Only intelligence and experience matter, and some of these comments demonstrate a clear lack of them.

Try not to pay too much attention to trolls (or beer spam). You rule!!

  9. the low-forehead commentary is actually a bit depressing. it makes one think that people get the country they deserve - like the fools in Belarus who voted for Lukashka, or the fools in the US who voted for Bushie...

May God save us from them all :-)))
