Really sorry for this silence - I'll be back very soon!

(Photo from our May 3 walk: Mat'-Rodina/Motherland/Baba statue, which also houses a WWII Museum, a very interesting place, now that I'm no longer required to go there for my high school Soviet history class.)

  1. Slava Baba!

I went there in high school too. Courtesy of Intourist. Of course it blew my mind, and I met a cute cadet named Georgi who was way more interested in talking to an American girl than the victory of rodina mat'...

  2. I have never heard that it is called Baba. Baba is the name of that lady balancing on the ball on the Maydan Nezhalezhnosti, right? Or I missed something ;)

  3. When I was over there, we always called it "Big Mama".

  4. To Sasha in Toronto: of course, the wonam with the sword has always been called Baba! The green woman on Maidan is Baba-2. BTW, did you know that the area between the original Baba and Lesya Ukrainka (by the Central election commission) is called "Betweenasses" (mezzhopie)? Since both "women" have their backs turned to each other :))

  5. Anonymous, that "mezzhopie" story is ridiculous. What you and a friend or two have called this is not what it is known as generally.

  6. well, there are always funny names for different places around the world. Kyiv is not exception here...despite the (nick)name, that area is lovely...
